Recently a number of reviews of Juveni products have appeared on Realself.com. These reviews are largely posted by one user and are negative in nature, making a number of allegations concerning our product range and manufacturing processes.
Obviously everyone has the right to share their viewpoint both online and offline. However there are some points that have arisen during this discourse that need to be clarified and corrected.
The Internet has provided consumers with never before envisaged opportunities to have their voices heard. The growth in popularity of sites like TripAdvisor and Yelp demonstrate the power that consumers now have.
However, recent news stories demonstrate the need to be wary of reviews posted on these sites and the motivations behind them. Recently TripAdvisor was told by UK authorities that it could no longer state its reviews were “trusted”, due to concerns about the source of user generated content.
In the US, popular review site Yelp has been forced to instigate monitoring techniques to ensure reviews are from unbiased sources. Allegations continue that negative reviews on the site are favoured for publication over positive reviews in order to obtain increased page hits – it is an unfortunate fact that people would rather read negative than positive reviews.
Having examined the problems with review sites themselves it is now necessary to examine the claims being made on Realself.com in detail.
Claim 1. Unhygienic syringes and syringe filling processes
Claims made in posts dated 15 October 2012, suggest that syringes supplied by Juveni are “cheap un sterile packaged syringes” and “can’t be in a proper safe sterile laboratory equipment” [sic]. We have no evidence of this and have yet to have a direct complaint from any customer relaying concerns of this nature.
Some of our products are supplied pre-filled in syringe refills from BD.com. These syringes, manufactured by BD.com themselves, are hygienic and reliable. BD.com is a renowned provider of medical supplies, devices, laboratory equipment, and has been an approved provider to government agencies and health services worldwide for over 100 years.

Claim 2. Contaminated products.
In a number of posts, including ones dated 12 October 2012, and 15 October 2012, allegations were made regarding Juveni products being contaminated with bacteria. Specifically one strain, Klebsiella, has been cited by a forum member as being the cause of a poor reaction to Juveni products.
We have no record of any of our products being infected with this bacterium. If the individual has in fact been infected with a strain of Klebsiella through the use of our products we would urge them to get in touch with us so that appropriate investigations can be undertaken. As we have not heard anything from our customers we can only assume that these claims are malicious.
Juveni utilises the latest in dense carbon based gas sterilization techniques. These methods address the problems that can arise during the process of sterilization of soft biomaterials such as hydrogels. Difficulties can arise during this process as using traditional methods of sterilization, can compromise hydrogels. Research has shown that dense CO2-based methods effectively sterilize hydrogels without affecting the viscoelastic properties, pH, water-content, and structure of the gels.
Since our sterilization process is research based, and has been shown to be so effective, it is highly unlikely that a bacteria strain could be present in any of our shipped products. We are confident that there is ZERO possibility of contamination from within our factory.
Claim 3. Legality of sales processes in the UK.
In a post dated 12 October 2012, a claim was made that it is illegal to purchase dermal filler products online in the UK. This is incorrect. While dermal fillers should obviously only be applied by a skilled practitioner it is perfectly legal at the current time to purchase these items by mail order within the UK. They are not classed as medicines and can be purchased by any member of the public.
The posts made on Realself.com rely heavily on emotive language and are light on factual information. Statements like, “we know the packaging is not sterile“ (post dated 12 October 2012) serve little purpose other than to arouse fear without evidence. This post does not confirm who the ‘we’ referred to is, and neither does it let us know the basis for ‘we’ believing this to be true. As such, statements like this achieve nothing. Without hard evidence being provided, these allegations appear increasingly as purely slanderous.
Anyone involved in the dermal filler industry, from manufacturers to practitioners, should be aware of the chances of allergic reaction and the importance of correct screening before application. Reactions are more likely if the correct allergy pre screening is not carried out as directed and can lead to the symptoms described in these posts.
Even if a pre screening process is correctly carried out, the end result is ultimately down to the skill of the person applying the filler. In cases where something has gone wrong it is the procedure that must be investigated, rather than the dermal filler product.
